The Asian-American actress Nancy Kwan recently returned to Hong Kong, the location of her first starring role in the 1960 film The World of Suzie Wong. Ms. Kwan's role as the beautiful Wanchai bar-girl was a breakthrough for Asian actors, since previously most Asian parts in Hollywood films had been played by Caucasian actors in "yellow face" makeup. Speaking at the Hong Kong Foreign Correspondents' Club, Ms. Kwan talked about the challenges that still face Asian actors in the film industry.
Ms. Kwan is of Eurasian descent, with a Chinese father and an English mother, and she also talked about her family background.
Ms. Kwan's speech at the FCC was filmed by APV, and can be watched in its entirety on YouTube. |
